Who Gets the Bread???

You guys did a great job presenting your arguments about why your group should get the bread. So now you get to step into Louis XVI's shoes...Who does he give the bread to? He has both the 2nd and 3rd Estates angry with him for different reasons. If you were Louis, how would you deal with this situation and why? Remember, you're trying to keep things as peaceful as possible in the middle of a financial and economic crisis without literally losing your head.

  1. I would deal with this situation by giving the 2nd estate back the high paying jobs so they could afford to live their lives + they would have to pay the 3rd estate more so everyone would have enough money

  2. If i was Louis XVI, I would handle the problem by lowering the taxes for the 3rd estate because there's not much I can do. If I'd had to give bread to the 2nd and 3rd estates, then you would never know when they would come back to me begging for more. If I lower the taxes they would be grateful they get 50 or 60% of the money they earn instead of 40%.
And I would also donate some of the money towards the 2nd estates because if I only lowered the taxes for the 3rd estates, that means the 2nd estate get a lower amount of money. This would effect the whole every estate because if the 3rd estate loses money then they would be too poor to pay for taxes to the 2nd estate. If the 2nd estate becomes broke then the amount of money the church gets from the church would also be effected. But the 1st estate only get 10% of the 2nd estate's money they earn.

  3. If I were Louis the 16th, I would find a way to divide the bread equally, and arrange for a fraction of the nobles to investigate possible bread and flour hoarders, and take temporary control of the bread shops to ensure no hoarding is accomplished. I would check up on the noble's progress every week or so.

  4. If I was Louis XIV,i would handle the problem by giving the second estate their good paying jobs back. Also, not have the third estate pay as many taxes because they don't have that much money as is, and if they give up all they have, they won't have any more to be able to keep themselves alive.

  5. If I was Louis XVI I would try to tax the first and second estates. I would understand that to save the country i may have to let go of some of my power, and take in reformist ideas. Personally I think that a more stable government could be created, and I could stay a figurehead who has power, but not in an absolute control way.

  6. If I were Louis XVI, I would give the bread to the third estate. I would explain that they must pay all the taxes, so they deserve it. I would then promise to give bread to the 2nd estate the next chance I got, because I wouldn't want the 2nd estate to get mad and rebel. The third estate is the majority of the population. If I gave the bread to the second estate, and if the third estate rebelled, they would have bigger and stronger forces than the 2nd estate. That would spell trouble to me as the king. I (Jillian) know that the third estate will rebel anyway, but if I were Louis XVI, I would give the bread to a member of the third estate.

  7. i would give the bread to people who need it most like the third estate. the 1st and second estates can use their own money and pay for what they need but its the 3rd estate that needs the help

  8. Well Mr Sancinito
What I would do would be to tax the first and second and third estates having the higher estates pay more, balanced on there income. So for example if a man named Maximilian a member of the 1st estate made a total of 500 dollars a month, he would pay say 150 dollars to the government because he makes more money. Another example a member of the 3rd estate makes 100 dollars a month he should have to pay 30$ dollars of tax. But only tax the people this much until the crisis is over. So evenly distribute the bread through all the estates but making sure the ones who are in most need get it first.
Thus once the crisis is over keep the taxing of people the same way but you can put the percentage down from what it was, so instead of 150$ it would be around 75$ and so on.
But the nobles will most likely get upset because they have never been taxed right?
Solution: give them jobs that either the estate above them had or have them have to work less and still get paid the same amount and everything would come out the kings pocket.

  9. If I was King Louis XIV i would give the bread to the 3rd estate and tell the 1st and 2nd that if they want more bread then they are going to have to be taxed like the 3rd estate is.

  11. If I was King Louis XVI, I would give 99% of the bread to the 3rd estate. Since they make up about 97% of the total french population and pay taxes. So the nobles will not be happy with me for not giving them more bread. I would tell them that if they want more bread, they should pay taxes. And if they do, I would lessen the amount of tax paid by the third estate and keep giving them 90% of the bread.

  12. If i was King Louis XVI, I would give most of the bread to the 3rd estate, because there are more of them. I would give some of the bread to the 2nd estate, but not much because there isn't as many of them as there is the 3rd estate. Also, I'd lower taxes on the 3rd estate, and give back the high paying jobs to the nobles. Maybe not all of them, but a few jobs.

  13. If I was Louis XVI I think that I would give the 2nd estate back thier heigh paying jobs so they could first they could afford the bread so I wouldn't have to worry about them but also for giving them back there heigh paying jobs I would ask them to pay low taxes so they are not a thret aswell. This would make it so I could give the bread mostly to the 3rd estate I would also be able to tax the 3rd estate alittle bit less so they got to keep more of there money but also I could make up my det quicker. I think that would be the best way to keep the most amount of people happy. That would be how I would have dealed with the situation if I was Louis XVI.

  14. If I was King Louis XVI, I would tax all three estates. The higher the income one makes, the more taxes they must pay. I would also give the 2nd estate some of their heigh paying jobs back, so they could buy their own bread. I would give most of the bread to the 3rd estate, since there are a lot of them, and most of them are very poor, and have a very low income.

  15. If I were Louis XVI, I'd first make sure that the third estate is being axed less. That way they get fed and have more money, so they're happy. To makeup for the difference, I'd also start to tax the second and first estates. Since the second estate doesn't always ensure you make money, I'd give back some of the jobs for the nobles, but not all so that the third estate doesn't get overly angry. the first estate would just have to get used to living in less than perfect conditions. They wouldn't be in any kind of financial trouble anyway.

  16. if i were louis XVI i would give the bread to the third estate. the 2nd and 1st estate may be angry about this, but they would rather not get bread then pay taxes. the 1st and 2nd estate either have the money or can save up the money for the bread because they have no taxes. i could also give them back some of the jobs such as doctor and lawyers so that they can have the money to support themselves and they would still have enough money if i were to lower the taxes to the third estate and give the 1st and 2nd estate taxes.

  17. If I were Louis XVI, in order to solve the problems against me, I would meet both sides of the people angry at me. This would hopefully bring peace to both of the 2nd and 3rd estates with me. For the 3rd Estate, I would understand their tough life and lower their taxes greatly and put the taxes on the 2nd estate because they have enough money. I would also make the bread sellers, lower the price extremely of bread, so that peoples salary of a month isnt for 1 loaf of bread (thats ridiculous).
Although, for the second estate, I would give them money for their service. The money I give them is the money that I "would" spend on silly and meaningless things, in order to please their money needs.
All bread would be distributed in a formal and organized way with troops to secure any outbreaks that occur.
My perspective must change in order for the society to change as well.
And I would spread word of my changes and put them into action while my head is attached.

  18. If i were Louis XVI i would give the bread to a lawyer or baker because the peasants starve anyway and cant offer me anything at least the bakers and lawyers can give me something in return. the lawyer would be my first choice. then the baker because the lawyer can protect me in court if i ever get in trouble

  19. If I was king I would have given up SOME of the nobles lands and my own land to the people of France so that they could grow more bread and make up for the bad harvest. This would also open up jobs for people getting the economy going because when theres more land then people get jobs as farmers and when they sell the bread and they get paid and when the farmers get money they spend it to buy things they from other working people creating more jobs and the money travels throughout France. This makes the French people happy and solves everyones problems.. . also making the 2nd estate and 1st estate pay taxes like the 3rd estate would help me keep my head.

  20. If I was the king aka (mr.s) then I would have given the bread to my group because we were pretty helpless without the bread from the king.Chris *my husband* was a baker and needed to make bread for everyone else and had to raise prices inorder to pay to get the ingredients and pay taxes which didn't leave us with much money for our own exspences beacuse almost nobody could afford our bread.
Brian *my son* was already working at a young age but had to stop and take care of me and his 7 other brothers and sisters because I was sick and wasn't doing well at all. He was also doing all the work around the house that I would normally be doing if I wasn't so sick like taking care of the farm animals, cleaning cooking.
