Labor Negotiation

What are the pros and cons of negotiating with management for better working conditions? What was the experience like in class negotiating with me? Do you think negotiations are a good way of settling labor disputes?

  1. some good things is that you might be able to convince your boss to do what every it is that you want. and the least that can happen is the boss saying no or you getting fired.i think it might be a little more intense than the negotiation in class because we were doing that just for class and no ones jobs were at stake. i think negotiations are good for settling labor disputes because you can gain what you want from your boss sometimes.

  2. Negotiations are a very safe and civilized way of changing something. When factory workers during the Industrial Revolution ask for better working conditions, they have every right to. Pros for negotiations include a verbal discussion that will make the boss more likely to do what the workers request, than protesting and physical violence. The could possibly reason with the workers and make some changes that is both benefiting for him and the factory workers. Cons include the rejection and possible firing just because workers asked for change, depending on the boss. Also, the boss will have arguements to negate and oppose requests. But hopefully, the workers will have counter arguements to back their point against the bosses. Or the boss might make the working conditions worse, by adding more hours, creating less wages, and introducing even more tasks just as the workers bring up what needs to be changed. Again, it depends on the boss.
    When the class formed groups to protest change against the teacher, the experience was rather irritating because the boss was attemting to put down what my group brought forth to alter in the working conditions. Over time, anger rose in my group and volume increased because we were tired of the boss opposing our ideas when they are totally logical and we are the ones working the long hard hours for horrible pay.
    Negotiations are definitely a better way of settling labor disputes. They are safe, more probable and civilized. Riots cause deaths and aren't very likely to change the rules because the government could get involved to control the workers, maybe putting soldiers in factories which would just make everything worse on everybody in every way.

  3. when negotiating with your boss about making changes with the place in whitch you work there are 3 things that could happen. First the boss could accept the changes that you want to be made and put the changes in affect this is the best case senario. Second senario is the boss could disagree with your changes and just egnore them and not change. The third thing that could happen would be that the boss doesn't agree with the changes that you are proposing so you get fired for thinking thies ideas. This is the worst case senario. The best thing that could happen would be dont if you are going to complaine to the boss get most of the fellow workers and threten to go on strike if he doesn't accept the changes. This is how the workers negotiated with their bosses. The pros would be is if you get what you asked for or a compramise. The cons would be if you dont get what you wanted than you are stuck with what you had befor. Also if you could get fired for asking for changes. I think that negotiating is the safest way to try to get change in the work place. Durring the negotition in class it was hard to get what we wanted because the road blocks for having senior priveledges for everyone is that the school is lacking money so you have to over come theis problems. But durring the industrial revolution I think that negotiating with the boss is the best chance to get change that there was.

  4. One of the pros of labor/management negotiations is working together towards a mutual compromise. Another pro is keeping the existing, trained workforce. However, the cons is that something might not be agreed on or acted upon. In class, you were a very, very, very, very, very, very open-minded employer, for example, you provided suggestions to people with half-formed ideas. Negotiations are, in my mind, an excellent way to solve disputes.

  5. Some of the pros of negotiating are;
    1. the boss could agree and improve your working conditions and salary.
    2. even if the boss refuses and fires you, you are safe because there will be no blood shed or violence whatsoever.
    Some of the cons are;
    1. the boss could fire you and you could remain jobless for the rest of your life.
    2. the boss could just ignore you or refuse to do anything about it.
    3. the boss could make your conditions even worse.
    So, considering the fact that negotiating has more cons than pros, I still think negotiating is the best way to solve any disputes and arguments because the only other option includes violence. If you protest or rebel against your own boss, the probability that your boss agrees with you is very less and if he doesn't, then it would probably cost you your life.
    Negotiating in class with you was a pretty awkward experience because to be honest, I don't have any problems with the schedule. If the topic was on something I really had a big problem with, I think it might have been a better example of what negotiating with your boss really is. And our group probably didn't do well because the schedule was good enough already and there was really nothing much to complain about and the complains that we made were very weak and could be easily opposed against. But overall I think negotiating is the best way to solve any disputes or arguments.

  6. Negotiating is good and bad there might be more cons than pros. One of the pros is that you can get what you want from your boss. For example maybe if you wanted a raise you could get a couple people from work and go to the boss and try and get a raise. A second pro is that there will be no violence if you negotiate and the worst thing that could happen to you is that you would get fired. One of the cons is that the boss could give you less pay for going against him. A second con is that you could get fired (i no its a pro and a con)that would be bad because you would have no money coming in and that would be worse than getting payed the little you were.

  7. There are many pros and cons to negotiating for better working conditions. One pro is that you will get your idea out there so that it will at least make your boss think about what the working conditions are really like. Also, if your arguing is good your request may actually be taken into consideration and changed. It is better to say something than nothing at all because in a lot of cases, your boss may be willing to comprimise. Although you may not get everything you want, you could get some or even most of the things you want changed. A comprimise is better than not saying anything and just having to deal with the poor conditions.
    Some cons are that many bosses don't care what their employees think and they will just ignore the requests for better conditions. All some bosses care about is money and they are not willing to sacrifice their money for those below them. They may be stubborn and close minded and not willing to comprimise.
    Negotiating in class was kind of difficult because we knew what we wanted to say but it is hard to think of rebuttles because we don't know what you were going to say. You make very good points and it is sometimes hard to go against those. We understand some of the "booss'" concerns and it can be hard to argue against the points we agreed with.
    Negotiations can be very affective if your boss is willing and open minded to change. However, many bosses may not care about catering to their employees needs. The labor disputes are not always settled and this will lead to violence between employees and bosses.

  8. Pros : 1. If you put your idea out then in the eyes of your boss your'e more of an individual and if your idea is good then it's good to be seen as an individual.
    2. All of your good ideas will ultimately affect you in a positive manner because even if you don't get directly rewarded the boss would only initiate the idea if helped the production process which ultimately helps you.
    Cons: 1. If you suggest a bad idea there is a good chance that the boss will likely not value your opinions anymore, there is also a fair chance that you will get fired or demoted.
    2. It's like a credit system, the more your ideas are embraced or denied the more you get employed or not

    It was very interesting to argue with you in class because in most cases everyone made valid points but it was hard to distinguish which were better bcause they were all their own individual scenarios.

    I believe that this is not the best way to do it I think that people should vote on it because then the boss can't put the blame on 1 person if it's a bad idea and it won't make one person vain

  9. The pros of negotiating better working conditions are you can fight for what you desire and make it possible to occur, and you can move up in the social ladder (depending on your working position). The cons of negotiating working conditions are that in certain cases, the employer may not wish to give in, or may be very ridgid about the way things are going in his/her/their working progress so far, and they might not want anything to change or to grant any of the things the worker is asking them to get.

  10. Some of the pros and cons of negoating with managment for better working conditions is that for some pros are you can get change from negoating but also some cons is that your negoating and you might not get everything that you are asking for. The experience in class negoating with you was is was kind of hard especially if we did not have a good rebuttle to what you said. No i dont think that negoating is a good way of settling labor disputes. I think people should vote but that wouldnt be much fair because all the workers would just vote yes but i think there should be some sort of voting pole.

  11. Negotiating with your boss for better conditions is a bad idea because money was tight back then and jobs were not available to all. If you refuse to continue your job conditions, then you want to talk about new changes to your business owner. Factories contained a lot of workers and every worker must be paid equally. Business owners or factory owners even hired children and women to work for them. Back then, children and women were not as "strong" or "durable" than men. Therefor, business and factory owners paid children and women less than men.
    In class, we all experimented on how workers negotiated with their boss (you). Every group or individual had different opinions and ideas. Based on how the boss looks at these new ideas and changes, he or she could agree if he or she liked these changes and would happily support them.
    Negotiating with your boss is not the brightest idea because business and factory owners have limits, money wise and if every worker got a raise then the business would get bankrupt. Business and factory owners usually have problems of having little money, and if the workers keep asking for more money, they aren't solving the money problems the business and factory workers have.

  12. Yes sir I do think that if you could not negotiate how would the problem be resolved by your superiors. A effective way to negotiate would be to ask something that you truly know could be done and that benefits him and yourself. Something I would not advise would be to argue for a better place to work because imagine all the money that would cost for a new workplace. You (mr Sancinito) did a very good job silencing out unrehearsed arguments, you did it with ease and authority. Anyway negotiating with you was very hard because you had so many counter points to shut down or pleas for a cleaner bathroom when it is in fact the students who are to blame. I think that back in industrial times it would not be a good idea to try and debate with your boss about benefits for yourself because that was not his concern he just wanted the work done he did not care how bad it was to work there, and firing someone was very easy because there was always someone waiting to come up to replace him or her. Allowing us to present our problems to you was a great learning experience because it shows that we really have to have a lot of good counter points to extinguish you. Well done.

  13. There are several pros and cons to negotiating with a superior for more rights or better conditions. A couple of pros would be that your opinion would be heard, and suggestions may be offered. Bringing up poor quality of a workspace may increase the awareness of needing to upgrade, clean, or otherwise improve said area. Also, negotiation is a safer way to demand rights than rioting, for those protesting and those who 'get in the way.' Some cons to the approach of negotiations are that you may be ignored, or your demands may not even be within the budget of whomever you're negotiating with. Also, you may be fired for complaining, then promptly replaced.

  14. The pros of negotiating for better working conditions is that your ideas can be heard and you get a say in the environment that you have to work in. When you negotiate, the boss can hear your point of view and can realize what is wrong and what has to be changed. The boss doesn't always work in the same area as you so he/she might not know what it is really like. The cons however would be that by negotiating, it isn't guaranteed that your boss will actually listen to you and your ideas. Sometimes, other tactics are better for getting the bosses attention and getting the working conditions fixed. When we negotiated in class, you really listened to our opinions and didn't take sides. I think that negotiating is a good way to settle labor disputes, but I don't think it is always the best way.

  15. Negotiating for better working conditions can be beneficial, but only if your boss agrees. you have to be careful, because complaining and making unreasonable demands could get you fired. You'd have to have a good argument that you fully believe in. Negotiating in class seemed to go well, cuz everyone made good arguments but sometimes we didn't really feel like what we were arguing for was that important, so we made an argument, but didn't try really hard to get the point across. Mr Sanco was also completely neutral and heard out the entire argument patiently and tried to see things from our point of view. A lot (if not most) bosses don't really want to hear the workers complaint because listening and fixing things cost time and money, and they don't care about their workforce that much. Negotiating, when dine well, works fine, but it's also risky for the workers, who have everything to lose.

  16. Negotiating is very important in life not only in the working world but also in everyday life. Some pros about it are your thoughts get heard and put into consideration when you are trying to come up with a decision which in most cases you are coming up with a decision that benefits everyone involved in the situation.Another pro is that it is very calm when trying to come up with a compromise because you dont just complain you give a brief explaination of what you want to negotiate and how it will help change things and make things better and a more comfortable enviornment for evryone. Based on our prodject in class I dont think theres any cons to trying to make a negotitate because its a win win situation because your getting your thoughts and feelings out and even if you dont get everything you want you said what you had to say. I know that it makes me feel better.. ")
