Communism in Russia

Based on what you've learned about the problems Russia was having prior to and after the Russian Revolution and what Vladimir Lenin and Josef Stalin did to fix those problems, do you think the people of Russia benefitted from Russia becoming Communist? Why or why not?

  1. I do not think that the Russians benefitted that much from Communisim, largely because of the secret police that was used during the Stalin regime. Another reason for concern is the use of labor camps. The secret police could be used for the kind of monstrous purges Stalin executed people during. Then, the labor camps show that people who weren't even thinking bad things about Stalin could die of such a poor living situation.

  2. Not really, maybe they thought it would be a new start but if I was a member of the country and knew what was happening I would not be so thrilled. What we learned today was that there were some good things within communism but they were overshadowed by the bad. Having the secret police going around screwing around with people was not ideal for people's personal privacy. Having to become an atheist and no real freedom for yourself was not on the good list. So no Russia did not benefit from becoming communist all it will do is screw things up more.
    Thank you

  3. Not at all. Russia wasn't in as bad of a position as it was before, but that was because of Lenin not Stalin. The people had almost no personal rights, and the smallest thing could get you thrown into what was basically a concentration camp. The fact of the matter is that communism works for small towns and, well communities (hence the name), but not for big countries. The benifites were limited and also had downsides, and people were being kicked out of Russia and being killed. Starvation was also a big problem. Its hard to imagine a country in a worse situation.

  4. I think that they did not benefit from being communist or at least not to the potential they could have. I think that if Russia had not become communist then would have got war reparations from the treaty of Versailles. Also they didn't benefit because the communist leaders that ended up ruling them were cold blooded killers.

  5. I don't think Russia benefited from Communism because whether a country becomes rich and economically satisfied depends entirely on the people and in case of communism at that period of time, most people were against it because if you were a Russian citizen , you could hardly get any profit for your self unless you were extremely poor. Russia had just escaped from WWI and had just fought a civil war, the people were leading bad lives and to add to that, communism brought another downside effect leading to starvation, arrests and deaths everywhere among the country under Stalin's rule. So all in all Russia did not benefit from communism.

  6. Communism did not benefit Russia because they were receiving opportunities but they did not agree to them. These rights and changes had mostly down sides and very little positive sides.
For example, Stalin promoted collective farming, a process of moving plots of land owned as a group, many were dying of hunger.
He also gave free education but schools taught children how to worship Stalin.

  7. i think that they benifited from the communist because there were alot of new ideas and free health care but on the other hand i think that the laws that they didnt have was not goood. just for not liking thew governmment, you bwould get thrown in jail. i think that the health care was good and the education was good but not the secret police and the work camps. stalin made it seem like everything was all fine and dandy but reallly everything was corrupt. the end

  8. I do not beleive Russia benefitted from becoming Communist. Communism, although it may seem good, never works out in the end. I think becoming communist brought false hope to the Russians. The people were mad and were looking for change. I think communism brought that change they were looking for, but they should have known that it wasn't going to last. I do not think communism brought the stability that Russia really needed at the time. The destruction of war weakened Russia greatly, so much that a Communist government couldn't possibly fix all that was needed. The people were so discontent and I think a capitalist government would have done a better job at making the people happy. Overall, the new government did bring about some needed changes, but a capitalist government could have done a better job at, in the end, actually maintaining control.

  9. I believe Russia benefited as a country from becoming Communist, but the people suffered for it. Housing, education, and health care were provided to people who needed it, although it was not of good quality. This can be attributed to the destruction of the war and the revolutions- There was not much food, housing, or health care to be distributed in the first place. If Stalin had been less paranoid about being overthrown and did not set the secret police on anyone with opposition, the overall policy may have worked to benefit the people as well as the state. If more organization had been put into industry, and the upper class had been given less benefits, the system may have worked.

  10. Overall, according to the events and laws carried out by Lenin and Stalin prior to the Russian Revolution, the Russian people did not benefit much from becoming Communist. There is no doubt that reforms were made by Lenin and Stalin to attempt to control the people with ease and repair the country. Such reforms included the installation of schools for all, rights for women, free health care, abundant bread servings and housing, as well as rebuilding of factories to boost the economy and military. With their pros, there are cons to everything. Lenin still insisted on a dictatorship, in which a small group of people at the top would control how the country ran. A few people would decide for millions of others, living very different lifestyles. This causes confusion and anger because the people of the lower/middle class aren't living as stable as they would want. Stalin's Great Purge had wiped out millions, (more than Hitler) suspected of counterrevolutionary acts. Great fear and terror filled the environment, and if one wasn't with him, they weren't going to live long, healthy life, as everyone deserves. The housing was crowded as more people moved to the city in search of jobs to support their families in the industrial factories of city-life. Jobs were fought over and struggle to support oneself caused social unrest, along with the lack of other food than plain bread. Communism runs in a way where all people share the goods and wealth of the country equally and all are treated equally, which is good, but actually bad in a sense. Because most of the population is poverty and low middle class, the upper class was upset and demanded a better life. The actual sharing of goods wasn't successful because the overall average pay was low and sharing would only bring a poor families life up minimally. A New elite group of upper class was created, leaving the rest of the common people out and upset. Tension was always around and peace was only secured when the police were in the area.

  11. No I do not think that the people of Russia benefitted in becoming a Communist government because they needed to moce forward and no one was motovated to do more work because no matter what they did they got paid the same amount and so they were repressed. And since they were repressed they were not moving forward and they werent living of how they would like to it more or less just turned into a dictatorship with Stalin.

  12. I think that communism is good and bad for Russia. It was bad for Russia because of things like the secret police. Russia benefited from things like education health care if they could get to it and place to live. Overall with Stalin in charge the country progressed but the people remained very poor because all surpuls would go to the state. This being the policy nobody could buy things which means people would not make thins to be sold.

  13. I thik that communism in Russia was a very good sounding idea and when it first started it worked out well but as it continued it got harder and harder to maintain. The idea seemed like a good fix to get Russia out of the dumps. It also worked for the begining becasue the people of Russia all believed that it was the right thing to do. So they didnt knotice all the bad things that were going on in there country after Stalin took control. Lenin did a good job to unite all of Russia under one rule that the people wanted. Then when Stalin to took control his ideas may have worked in another place but after coming out of a war along with two revolutions his harsh rule and prisons were not a good match for the new Russia. This caused Russia to not prosper ver much. This is my view of why communism in Russia was a good sounding idea but a bad exicuted idea.

  14. I think commusnism in Russia was a very good idea. I think it was good for Russia because of the free health care and housing, and also, the daycare center for their children, for when the adults go to work. They also benefited from the free education, for the children. Although, there were some bad results too. There was barely enough housing as is, so not many people were able to stay, so many had to move to other cities. the education the children were getting was just teaching them all about stalin and how great he was, so it was just teaching them to follow him at a young age. So I think Russia did and didn't benefit fom becoming communist. If that makes sense.

  15. I really don't think that Russia benefited almost at all. Yes, the economy got better, and there were places to live and jobs to do, but there was no privacy, freedom, or individuality. Also, people were being killed left and right for opinions that they had. Yeah, it's great and all that there's free healthcare and education, but half the people didn't get those chances because they were either starving or being executed for no good reason. Also, people who didn't agree with the communist government reacted badly to it, by burning food and slaughtering animals. It was overall just a bad reaction. So, yes, a few good things came of it, but in the end it was a bad idea.

  16. I think that communism should have helped the Russian people. The problem was that russia wasn't really communist, because Stalin, who was completely crazy, just had all the power and could do whatever he wanted. Political power didn't belong to the people, like Karl Marx wanted. Nothing was shared evenly, and there were even Soviet elite who enjoyed special privileges. That's not actual communism, so its not the fault of communism that there wasn't enough housing, and the Secret Police could bug your house, take everything you own, and quietly pull you into an alley and shoot you. that was all Stalin. the communist revolution was slightly responsible, since that was what put Stalin in power.

  17. I don't think that Russia benefited much, if at all, from being communist. Some of the pros of communism were that people got a free education, free health care, and affordable housing, however, the cons, like the secret police, the concentration camps, and making people work on collectives far outweighed the pros. People who weren't even against Stalin were thrown into jail or sent to concentration camps, and Stalin made it seem like everything was perfectly fine. So, overall, I do not think that Russia benefited from being communist.

  18. I think that it was good for Russia to be communist after the war because it got them back on track. It helped them become organized and create a form of goverenment that worked. However, it was bad to stay communist after they fixed most of the damage. Because they stayed communist, the rulers got more power hungry. I thinkit was a good choice to turned communist but at the same time it didnt fix everything.
